Is Time Getting Faster?
Relativity is a very interesting concept and as days go by we get the feeling that time is just flying by, as though time is getting faster and faster with every passing day. So the question of the moment is if time is really getting faster and why do we feel so. I had a small hunch as to why we feel so and did a small experiment back in my college days. Not even 5 lines into the article and we already are talking about relativity and experiments as though its a paper on Physics, but don’t worry this experiment was quiet fun indeed.
The Theory of Everything
I started making conversation with my friends and asked each of them what was their most memorable moment in life and when it happened. I was getting interesting answers ranging from recent birthday celebrations, meeting up with their loved ones, road trips and so on that happened years back. I am asking the same question to you, what is your most memorable moment in life and when it happened? My next question to them was what they had posted to their WhatsApp or Instagram stories 2 weeks back and all of a sudden each and every one of them had to think a lot but still could not recall what they had posted. Do you feel the same way as well? I sure as hell felt the same way when I asked these questions to myself. That’s when I wondered how I was able to recall memories that happened so long ago so clearly but not have any clue of something very recent. Same logic as to how we will not remember the food we ate for breakfast on a specific day, it becomes a routine as mobile phones have becomes such an important aspect of our lives.
So the answer to the question is that no time has not gotten faster by any means but it is just that we have started living a mechanical life with the same routine day after day that makes us feel like its all a blur. I have been living with my parent for the past 7 months after many years but it feels like I just moved in due to Covid 19. We all would have experienced this especially during the lockdown as almost every single day was the same day all over again. In order to live a memorable life break the mundane routine and do something fresh every once in a while so that when you look back and reminiscence you will have so much stories to tell and moments to recall.
A walk down memory lane every once a while will make us enjoy the beautiful moments in our life which wouldn’t normally come to our mind in our busy schedule. I love looking back at old photos and videos and have a good laugh over how much weight I have put on or how funny I used to look back in the day. I have made it a point to take a photo for every small moment in life so that it never fades away with time. So here are few ways to savor those moments in a way so that they look beautiful even after years.
Digital Memory Vault
Use your own enemies for you by turning social media to your digital memory vault instead of a space where you just spend time. Don’t focus on the likes that you get for the posts but instead post photos of memories you do not want to forget. Nowadays photo albums have almost gone extinct except for special occasions and so Instagram seems to be the perfect online photo album. Post stories from the memorable moments you enjoy and group them into highlights based on categories like travel, friends, family and so on. Posts and stories make the perfect combo for this combo. Or you can turn it up a notch by vlogging using YouTube as I’m pretty sure the video we make today would be so interesting to watch it 5 years later with a whole new life. Or you can get onto platforms like Medium and share your experiences and make it your online journal. Never shy away from taking photos because even blurry images can remind you of hundreds of emotions.
Scrap book
If you’re not into sharing your personal life online then make a scrapbook. You can design your own scrapbook the way you want it but if you ask me I would prefer a black paper book on which printouts of your most favorite photographs from various memorable moments can be pasted. I then would use a white ink pen to write on the black sheet a small snippet about the moment or you can build a photo wall in your room. You can take videos and use it to make a fun edit and keep it with yourself too. It can seem like a lot of work but it will definitely be worth it when you smile looking at all the crazy stuff you did.
Souvenirs
Usually people collect souvenirs when they travel but collecting them even for regular memories is a really great idea. It might seem a bit naïve to keep something like notebooks, magazines or an entry pass from the special moments but when I looked at my school diary that I used during second standard it was nothing but fascinating to see the journey I’ve been on so far. It had information about my homework, my student savings account, my height and so much more. So it is definitely worth it to save such things.
It’s all about the Story
I personally do all of this and I hope you would do at least one of this so that one day when you’re old sitting and telling stories to your grandkid you can show them how life was back in your day. Well what’s the point of life if you can’t tell a good story at the end of the day.
